For this course and its exercises, you do not need to install Nmap yourself, but you can do so if you want. However, remember that Nmap, like other cybersecurity testing tools, should not be used on any target without permission.

## Windows

Installing the Nmap tool for the Windows operating system is quite simple.

1. Go to the address [https://nmap.org/download.html](https://nmap.org/download.html) and download the Nmap Windows Installer package by clicking on the "Windows Installer" link (e.g. nmap-7.93-setup.exe).
1. When the package has been downloaded, double-click on the visible Nmap installation file in the download window to start the installation program.
1. Follow the installation program instructions and accept all necessary license agreements and terms of use.
1. Choose installation folder and click "Next".
1. Choose whether you want to create a desktop shortcut for Nmap and/or add the Nmap path to the system's PATH variable. Then click "Install".
1. After installation is complete, you can open Nmap from the command prompt by typing "nmap" and pressing the Enter key.

## Linux

Instructions for installing Nmap tool for Debian/Ubuntu, Manjaro, and Fedora Linux distributions:

Debian/Ubuntu:

1. Open terminal.
1. Enter the command "sudo apt update" to update the package listings.
1. Enter the command "sudo apt install nmap" to install Nmap.

Manjaro:

1. Open the terminal.
1. Enter the command "sudo pacman -Sy nmap" to update the package lists and install Nmap.

Fedora:

1. Open the terminal.
1. Enter the command "sudo dnf install nmap" to install Nmap.

Instructions for installing the Nmap tool on the macOS operating system:

1. Download the Nmap .dmg package from [https://nmap.org/download.html#macosx](https://nmap.org/download.html#macosx).
1. Install dmg package.
1. Open Terminal application.
1. Write the command "sudo ln -s /Applications/Nmap.app/Contents/Resources/bin/nmap /usr/local/bin/nmap" and press the Enter key.
1. Now Nmap has been installed for macOS operating system, and you can use it in the terminal by typing "nmap" and pressing the Enter key.
