What Is Sherlock?
Sherlock is designed to search for the presence of a given username on hundreds of online platforms. These platforms include social media services, discussion forums, developer communities, content sharing sites, and smaller niche services. The tool does not access private information or bypass authentication mechanisms. Instead, it checks publicly accessible web endpoints to determine whether a username appears to exist on a specific service.
From an OSINT perspective, Sherlock helps investigators understand the breadth of a digital footprint rather than its depth. It answers the question of where an identity may exist online, not who the person is.
